Liam

“You look different today.” I studied my sister as she leaned against her kitchen counter.

Alina touched her hair, giving me a weirdly nervous look. “No, I don’t.”

“Yes, you do.” I peered closer at her. “Are you wearing makeup?”

“Maybe,” Alina said.

“Why?”

“I have a client picking up an embroidery,” she said.

I scowled at her. “You know you’re supposed to call Finn or me when you do a local pick up. It’s not safe for you to be here alone with a stranger.”

“She didn’t have to call. We’re here, aren’t we?”

Nick’s voice was muffled, but that wasn’t surprising, considering he was lying on his back on the floor with his upper body inside the cabinet under the kitchen sink.

“No comment from the peanut gallery.” I tapped Nick on the leg with my foot.

“He’s right,” Alina said. “I didn’t say anything because I knew you and Nick would be here.”

I rolled my eyes as Alina squatted and peered under the cupboard. “Nick, you don’t have to do this. I can call a plumber.”

“He’s a physicist,” I said, “who fancies himself a plumber.”

“Nah, it’s a basic repair,” Nick said as he flipped me the bird with his free hand. “Besides, I’m done. Hold on. I’m turning the water back on.”

There was a squeaking sound, and then Nick said, “Liam, turn on the tap.”

“Sure.” I reached over and turned on the tap. Alina gasped, and I laughed when water sprayed out from under the cabinet, soaking Nick’s shirt and undoubtedly his face.

“Fuck!” Nick shouted. “Turn off the goddamn tap, Liam!”

I turned off the tap, and Nick slid out from under the sink. I laughed harder, and he scowled at me as he climbed to his feet. Water drenched his upper body, and his dark hair was completely soaked.

“So,” I said. “How’d that go?”

“Apparently, I forgot to tighten one of the drain couplings,” Nick said as water dripped down his face.

“I’ll get you a towel,” Alina said.

“Thanks, Alina.”

She limped out of the kitchen. Less than ten seconds later, the doorbell rang.

“Liam, can you get that? It’s my client. Tell her I’ll be right with her,” Alina called.

“Sure.” I left the kitchen as Nick stripped off his shirt and wrung it out in the sink.

I walked to the front door as Alina headed to the kitchen with a towel. I opened the door and stared in surprise at Sophie standing on the front porch.

“Sophie? What are you doing here?”

She stared blankly at me before blurting, “I’m not stalking you. I bought something… a local seller… embroidery… what is happening right now?”

I grinned at her, happier to see her gorgeous face than I should have been. She stared suspiciously at me. “Do you secretly embroider and pretend your name is A. Manning?”

I laughed. “It’s my sister, you dork. She uses our mom’s maiden name for her Etsy store.”

“Oh! That makes sense because in her picture, she….”

“She what?” I asked.

“You guys have the same eye colour.” Sophie turned a little red and cleared her throat. “So, I didn’t know you lived with your sister.
